The Democratic Club of Claremont Has Its Own Cable TV Programs

The Democratic Club of Claremont continues to produce two half-hour programs on Time Warner Cable Channel 29, Thursday evening at 8:30 PM, and Friday evening at 8:00 PM, respectively.  You can watch them live with no commercials!  And of course you always can record them if you are busy those evenings, as many people are.

These programs are available for your enjoyment in the cities of Claremont, Pomona, and Covina.  Thursday's programs cover a wide variety of topics.  Currently Friday is dedicated to the oral histories of various people and organizations, given by some of our long-term residents in the area.

“Operation Capitol Hill”

Currently our Thursday evening “Claremont Democratic Forum” is airing an interview with our “Voorhis Voice” newsletter editor, Ron Wolff. Merrill Ring, Club Treasurer, hosts the program and discusses with Ron his futuristic novel about how our country could operate if our civil liberties are not protected. Set 30 years into the future, “Operation Capitol Hill” depicts Washington DC as a Disneyland clone (with additional layers of security) and its outlying suburbs as bleak living at best. Wolff describes the setting as the result of Republican “trickle down” economics. The book title is also the title of a plot to extend the powers of the executive branch of government so as to be absolute and to destroy any system of checks and balances. The half-hour program begins at 8:30 PM and will show on April 19 and 26.

Desegregating Dallas, Texas

Our Friday program, “Democrats: People and Ideas” feature Jim Stripling, who had been the “Voorhis Voice” editor and Special Events Co-Chair through this past year.

Host Merrill Ring discusses some of the events of Jim’s adventurous life. Besides oil painting, newspaper publishing and writing, and participating in sporting events, Jim and his wife, Connie, spent two years desegregating Dallas, Texas. Jim describes the effort as having been accomplished in three days, once the groundwork had been laid. The half-hour program begins at 8:00 PM.

In conjunction with Claremont’s Centennial, the DCC is producing an oral history series in which we record the achievements of local distinguished Democrats. Jim’s activities are the third in this series. We have also aired an interview with Ware Myers in which he describes the part his wife, Helen, played in establishing the club system of the modern California Democratic Party.

Another program featured Milford Zornes, Claremont resident and artist, who painted the mural in the Claremont Post Office lobby as part of the WPA effort.

Our Vice-President for Education, Ivan Light, has initiated an effort to have the post office and its lobby mural declared a “national historic landmark”. Please contact Ivan at 621-1159 or ClaremontDemocrats@yahoo.com to join in accomplishing this.
