Resolution for Middle East Peace

The Democratic Club of Claremont urges the Obama administration to make vigorous diplomatic and financial efforts to end the violence and hostilities between Israel and Palestine and support the creation of two economically and politically viable states. To this end:

  1. We urge the Obama administration to support efforts to obtain a long term cease fire in Gaza, with the clear understanding that this cease fire must include a full opening of all border crossings into Gaza, including the seaport, for all non-military traffic, including humanitarian and commercial.
  2. We urge the Obama administration to support the creation of a Palestinian Unity Government that represents and speaks for all parts of Palestinian society. In addition, we urge the Obama administration to lead in an international effort to increase the investment for reconstruction and economic development for Gaza and the West Bank.
  3. We urge the Obama administration to take effective diplomatic and financial steps to promote a cessation of all expansion of settlements on the West Bank, including so-called "natural" expansions.
  4. We urge the Obama administration to pressure Israelis and Palestinians to abide by the Fourth Geneva Convention using such diplomatic and financial sanctions as are available. This includes a cessation of all violence: (a) on the West Bank and in Gaza, such as targeted assassinations, arrests without warrants, home demolitions, incarceration of political leadership, deportations, expropriation of land and bombings; and (b) on Israel and its settlements through rocket attacks, suicide bombings and shootings.
  5. We urge the Obama administration to support the creation of a Regional Water Administration to equitably distribute water resources to Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.
This resolution was adopted by members of the Democratic Club of Claremont on February 23, 2009.
