Minutes of the March 30, 2009 General Membership Meeting
THE DEMOCRATIC CLUB OF CLAREMONT GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING Minutes – March 30, 2009, 7:30 pm, Porter hall, Pilgrim Place Attendance Zephyr Tate-Mann, President, and approximately 28 members in attendance Speaker Merrill Ring introduced Lako Tongun, a Sudanese native and Professor at Pitzer College. Tongun’s subject was “Mass Atrocities and the ICC Indictment of Sudan’s Head of State, Hassan al Bashir”. He traced the history of Sudan from its independence in 1956 to the present, describing the ethnic, regional and religious differences that have led to nearly continuous strife in the country for over 50 years. He discussed the reasons for the genocide in Darfur as well as southern Sudan: the Khartoum government which is Arab/Muslim is trying to control all of the natural resources (oil) as well as the agricultural areas in the southern and western parts of the country which are populated by African Sudanese. The Business Meeting was called to order at 8:55 pm. MSA Agenda was approved MSA (Charles) Minutes of the February 23rd meeting were approved. Zephyr announced that they will be posted on the website and in the Voice. Zephyr introduced Jessica Zellinger and Corin Hamilton?, political science students from Pomona College who came to observe our meetings. Zephyr encouraged them to join and to bring other students as well. Darcel Woods was introduced as a new member. Russ Warner, our candidate for the 26th Congressional District last November, was introduced and announced that he will be receiving an award from Howard Dean at the State Dem Convention. He also complimented his wife for her work in running the family business so that he can continue to pursue his political work. Zephyr passed around a list of Ad Hoc Committees with the request that members sign up for any that would interest them. She explained that the purpose of expanding our committee participation was to 1) encourage activism, 2) increase membership and 3) get the Club more organized so as to make a bigger impact. MSA (Gar) Ted Radamaker, Ned Freed, Laura Ditte Lo, and Lois Thompson were reappointed to the Executive Committee. Announcements Larry Schroeder, our endorsed candidate for Claremont City Council, did win one of the two Council seats! He was unable to attend our meeting, but provided some written information of the Affordable Housing project. Andy Winnick who was also on the Affordable Housing Task Force informed us that a new site had been agreed upon. This is on College Ave where the Claremont Courier offices had been. Bob Gerecke said that the new housing may help to keep Oakmont School open and because of that he expected wider neighborhood support for the project. Zephyr announced the May training for Democracy for America put on by Henry Vandermier. Loretta Arenas expressed interest in attending. The State Convention will be at the end of April. Bob G, Rudy, Russ, Gar, Ted, Zephyr and Ivan will be attending. Rudy requested that we begin discussing whether we want to have a permanent Headquarters office before the next Gubernatorial election.
