Minutes of the February 23, 2009 General Membership Meeting

THE DEMOCRATIC CLUB OF CLAREMONT
GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
Minutes – February 23, 2009, 7:30PM, Porter Hall, Pilgrim Place

Attendance: Bob Gerecke, chair and, after the election of officers, Zephyr Tate-Mann chair; with approximately 36 members in attendance.

Announcements:

Rudy Mann had various swag (t-shirts, bumper stickers, etc.,) available for a contribution.

Audrey Sorrento spoke and distributed information about the Iraq War Memorial Vigil to be held Friday, March 20 from 4:30 until 6:00 PM at Indian Hill Blvd. and Arrow Highway.

Zephyr Tate-Mann told of the upcoming 9th annual Police and Community Forum, sponsored by the Human Relations Council of the Pomona Valley. The event will begin at 9:30 AM on Saturday, March 14 at the Hughes Center in Claremont. Police chiefs from local communities will discuss the economy, crime, and law enforcement with interested citizens.

Larry Schroder, candidate for Claremont City Council, asked for volunteers to work for his campaign. He also announced that the Los Angeles County Democratic Central Committee would arrange for robo-calls.

Speaker:

Chris Viers, a City of Claremont planner, spoke on “Claremont Sustainability: People, Planet, Prosperity”. At the end of the program Mr. Viers announced that Claremont’s first Earth Day Event is scheduled for Sunday, April 26.

Business:

MSA (Gene Boutillier) by acclamation, the members approved the new slate of officers: President: Zephyr Tate-Mann; Vice-President for Organization: Gar Byrum; Vice-President for Education: Merrill Ring; Recording Secretary: Carol Whitson; Corresponding Secretary: Carolee Monroe; and Treasurer: Debi Evans.
Zephyr thanked the members and introduced the officers. She then recognized Bob Gerecke, now Past-President and Ivan Light, former Vice-President for Education. She gave them certificates of appreciation on behalf of the Club.
Zephyr then shared her vision for the Club.

MSA (Bob Gerecke) the members unanimously approved the change in the By-laws referring to the eligibility for office.

Resolution:

Merrill Ring, Chair of the Issues Committee, introduced the revised resolution for Middle East Peace. Andy Winnick and Audrey Sorrento spoke in favor of it while Ivan Light opposed some of its language. When
the presenters agreed with Ivan’s suggestions, a secret ballot vote was taken. The resolution passed with 75% of the members voting in favor of it. There were 27 “yes” votes, 3 “no” votes and 6 abstentions.

MSA (Debi Evans) the meeting was adjourned at 9:40PM.
