Minutes of the April 27, 2009 Generall Membership Meeting
THE DEMOCRATIC CLUB OF CLAREMONT Meeting of the General Membership Minutes – April 27, 2009 - 7:30 PM, Porter Hall ATTENDANCE: Zephyr Tate-Mann, chair; approximately 34 present PROGRAM: Merrill introduced Joseph Bookstein,M.D., founder of the San Diego Chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility and Professor Emeritus, Radiology, UC San Diego. His subject was “Global Warming: the Population Connection.” Dr. Bookstein provided statistics and data that the primary cause of global warming are the needs and wants of the global human population, now over 6.6 billion. He reviewed the various technical solutions to reduce greenhouse emissions and explained how each “green” alternative had little chance of truly solving our warming problem. His proposal is to address the problem through a global effort at population control with the goal of reducing the world population to 2.3 billion. ANNOUNCEMENTS and BUSINESS: Zephyr reported that delegates Gar Byrum, Bob Gerecke, Ted Radamaker, Gwen Carr, Rudy Mann and Ivan Light had attended the State Democratic Convention. John Burton was elected the new State Dem party Chairman. Carolee Monroe was applauded for the success of the Earth Day booth. She said that over 300 people visited our booth and planted their cups of poppy seeds. She recognized the help of Loretta Arenas, Jim Stripling, Lois and Rhodes Thompson, Anne Koegel, Beverly Sloan and Gabe, Murray, Marlena and Jack Monroe. Membership approved the Exec Committee proposal to co-sponsor (with Pomona Valley Peace Network and progressive Christians Uniting) a talk by Stephen Zarlenga, director of the American Monetary Institute and former advisor to Dennis Kucinich, to be held in Decker Hall on Wed, May 6, 2009. Bob Gerecke announced the ongoing effort to raise funds to get a permanent HQ building while real estate prices are at the current low point. Bob noted that even some Orange County Dem clubs hoping to establish permanent HQs. The DCC has received its 2009 Club Charter from the LA County Central Committee. MSA for approval of Darcel Woods and Mike Davis as new members of the Executive Committee. Carolee Monroe requested additional volunteers for the July 4th event. Carol Whitson, Betty Cramer, Beverly Sloan and Mike & Donna Davis will also assist. Gar Byrum and Andy Winnick explained the very confusing propositions on the May 19 Ballot. State Convention recommendations were even different from the LA County Central committee’s.
