Minutes of the October 12, 2009 Executive Committee Meeting

THE DEMOCRATIC CLUB OF CLAREMONT
Meeting of the Executive Committee
Minutes – October 12, 2009,  9:30 AM Scrooby Lounge

ATTENDANCE: Zephyr Tate-Mann, chair; Lois Thompson, Merrill Ring, Carolee Monroe, Ned Freed, Laura Ditte Lo,  Bob Gerecke, Darcel Woods and Carol Whitson.

MSA  The meeting Agenda was approved.

MSA  The ExComm minutes for September 12, 2009 were approved as submitted and the General Membership minutes for September 29, 2009 were approved as revised to add mention of the Police Commission meeting.

Debi Evans was absent due to illness so there was no Treasurer’s report presented.

Expenditures:

MSA to allocate $100 to Carolee Monroe for the Village Venture “Health Care” bags she is making.  Additionally, a motion to provide $300 to Carolee for the Holiday Party was approved.

Committee Reports:

Merrill reported that at Friday’s Issues Committee meeting Andy Winnick announced that the Chamber of Commerce was starting a Claremont Calendar on which we will be able to post announcements of our activities and meetings.  Merrill will make sure that our meetings are posted there.  He also reported that the Chamber had the ability to post U-Tube videos and was seeking items about Claremont.  Ned and Merrill will pursue this.  Merrill highly recommended the Friday LA Times’ Opinion section for excellent articles by Neil Gabler and Ron Brownstein and also one on the Swiss health care system.

Publicity - Carol has found the contact person at the Daily Bulletin to send meeting announcements.  Zephyr has done the same for the Courier.  Our next luncheon on October 9 will be fully advertised.

Carolee will be ready for Village Venture with the above mentioned Health Care bags.  She will have her family set up and take down the booth.  She is ordering the insurance coverage.  All time slots for manning the booth are filled.  Laura will coordinate informational literature to give away.  Zephyr will try to get the Lakoff petition for his ballot initiative, ‘The California Democracy Act’, so that we can gather signatures.

Ned will be our representative to the Sustainable Claremont organization.  His particular interest is in the setup of municipal and household gray water systems.

Carolee reported that she had checked with several more City venues for our Holiday party.  The approximate cost of each venue was nearly $500 and then food costs would be additional.  The ExecCommittee decided to accept Lois’ suggestion of holding the party in the Scrooby Lounge.  Carolee will prepare the meats and purchase some items from Costco.  Hopefully Ivan will be able to bring his mulled wine.  We will ask guests to bring desserts. The date will be Sunday, December 6, from 4-7 pm.

Reminder: Mary Caenepeel, School Board Candidate, will need volunteers and phone bankers prior to the election.  Contact Teddy Warner at 909-621-2580 or tkwarner©verizon.net  if you can volunteer.

Newsletter:  Our, as yet incomplete, effort to update and classify our membership and mailing list was discussed in relation to the number of returned newsletters that we receive each month.  If the total mail-out is less than 200 we cannot use the bulk rate so it may be necessary to change to first class mail.  We also need a better system for eliminating out-dated addresses.  The membership committee will continue working on that aspect.  Carol suggested that some mailing houses may be able to print and mail (bulk) the newsletters at a lower rate than we can.  Laura will contact some mailing houses to compare.

Zephyr passed around the Anthony Adams Recall petition.  Our fellow club member, Darcel Woods, is now officially running for the seat in the 59th Assembly District!

On Thursday, October 8 at 7:00 p.m. on the 2nd Floor of City Hall, there will be a special meeting of the Police Commission.  The subject will be the police response to the recent Health Care Town Hall Forum of which the DCC was one of the sponsors.   We encourage everyone to attend so as to show our continued concern for the poor police handling of conflict and to encourage new procedures on their part.

On Saturday, October 10, 2009, a meeting of the CDP Platform Committee for Regions 11 and 16 will be held in Ontario.  It will be at the CTA Ontario Regional Resource Center, located at 3175-C Sedona Court, Ontario, CA 91764.  Delegates as well as interested Democrats are encouraged to attend.  If you would like to submit resolution information or platform proposals – or if you plan to attend – please contact Bon Gerecke or Zephyr Tate-Mann.

Zephyr will invite the chairpersons of each of our Ad Hoc committees to our next Executive committee meeting so that everyone can focus on the best ways of contributing to the growth and improvement of our club.
She also suggested that we make an effort to interview more of our distinguished members as we used to do when we had a TV program.  Now we are able to put them on U-Tube, onto our website or on the Claremont Chamber of Commerce website.

Meeting was adjourned at 11:10 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,

Carol Whitson
Recording Secretary
